Christner Laboratory at Louisiana State University

Laboratory: 1500 ft2 of recently renovated laboratory space in the Life Sciences Building at LSU. The laboratory is equipped with standard equipment for microbiology and molecular biology including thermal cyclers, gel electrophoresis units, cold temperature growth incubators, high-precision freezers, water baths, centrifuges, UV/visible spectrophotometers, luminometer, fluorometer, laminar flow hoods, and a 80 ft2  walk-in cold room (4oC).

Clean facilities:  a class 100 laminar flow hood with germicidal UV lamps that is housed within a 70 ft2 class 10,000 clean room (Modular Cleanrooms, Inc.).

Cold facilities: 250 ft2 of temperature-controlled environmental rooms (190 ft2 of working space from 4 to -10oC; 60 ft2 of cold storage at -20oC) for experiments and storage. The working room contains laboratory benches, a laminar flow hood, band saw, light table, and sub-zero growth incubators.

Cryobiological microscopy: Olympus BX51-TRF epifluorescence microscope with a Linkam large area thermal stage (temperature Range: -196°C to 125 °C).

Computers: 6 computers (5 XP Windows and 1 SuSE Linux) equipped with office and scientific software. All computers are connected to the internet and are supported and maintained by the LSU Information Technology Center.

Office: 250 ft2 of office space for housing undergraduate/graduate student and postdoctoral researchers.

Major equipment:  The Department of Biological Sciences at LSU maintains several large facilities with technical help and state-of-art instrumentation, including the laboratories for Functional Genomics (DNA sequencers, real time PCR, Scan Array and Microarray equipment), NMR analysis and mass spectrometry (Kratos high-resolution, Finnigen tandem, and Bio-Ion Plasma Desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometers), and confocal, light and electron microscopy (in the Socolofsky Microscopy Center).  Common instruments and facilities include tissue culture facilities, ultracentrifuges, media preparation facilities, darkrooms, walk-in cold rooms, plant-growth chambers, animal facilities, and aquatic facilities.
